"Then
the angel said to them,
Do
not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy
which will be to all people.
For
there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is
Christ the Lord."
Luke
1: 10-11
This is the
time of the year when people spend more money than normally do
throughout the year. Stores are more crowded, lines are longer, and
people are more focused on getting the perfect gifts. They will pay
insane amounts of money to make sure they get their friends and
family the gift that will make them happy, even if it's only a
temporary happiness. And really, that happiness is always temporary.
That happiness will quickly disappear when a newer, bigger, better
thing is put out on the shelves. There is no lasting happiness in an
earthly gift.
However, as
Christians, we have hope in this consumer-driven world. We have a
lasting joy. We recognize this time of the year as a time to
celebrate and to have fun, but more importantly, we recognize this
time of the year as the when God wrapped himself in flesh and was
born into this world to bring us salvation and joy. The joy of the
Lord is a happiness that is lasting. Nothing bigger, better, or
newer can ever compete with the joy God has given us. So instead of
only focusing on this month as a time to fight over parking spaces
and push over the last gadget on the shelf, take time and remember
that the birth of Jesus truly is the reason why we celebrate.
