Desperation
All of us have been desperate for something at some point in our
lives. Maybe you have been desperate to pass an exam that you
did not study for or desperate to win the affection of someone
that you liked. You may have been desperate to buy a popular
item or desperate to go hang out with all of your friends on a
Saturday night. On the other side of that though are those who
are truly in a desperate situation. There is the man who is
desperate to find work so he can provide for his family, or the
woman who is desperate to keep her marriage together. People in
many parts of the world are desperate to find something suitable
to eat or clean enough to drink.
No matter which side of desperation that you find yourself on or
where you are in between there is a common factor for all those
who are desperate. Desperate people say and do things that they
normally would not do in ordinary situations. When you are truly
desperate for something you will do whatever it takes to obtain
what you desire. If you want something bad enough you will
step out of your comfort zone and even become someone that you
are not in order to get what you want. Humiliation, the opinion
of others, pain, being uncomfortable and sometimes even the law
do not matter to those who are truly desperate for something.
Desperation changes the way people think and the way that they
act. What is so amazing about this is that people who are
desperate do not care what they have to change or go through, as
long as they get what they are after. We see this sort of
desperation every day in the lives of people chasing after what
they need or think they want. Desperation is what drives us to
work harder and pursue our dreams. It has become a common sight
in 21st Century America. Society is driven by the
concept of doing whatever it takes to get what they want.
Sadly, what is not so common is that same level of desperation
in the lives of Christians. People who unashamedly say and do
things to further themselves at school or at work are far more
timid when it comes to their love for Jesus Christ. Many say
that they love Jesus and want to go to Heaven, but do not put a
lot of effort or sacrifice into pursing a relationship with
Jesus. We should be willing to sacrifice much more to have a
relationship with God, then for anything else in our lives.
After all, your relationship with God is the only thing in life
that is eternal. We need to trust God when he said in Matthew
6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his
righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Instead of pursuing the things in life that we are desperate for
and effortlessly serving God, we need to put everything we have
into serving Him and in doing so God will take care of
everything else. It is pretty clear: throw all you have into
getting what you want and lose your soul, or throw all you have
into serving Jesus, receive salvation, and He will provide all
our needs.
Are you in love with Jesus Christ? How badly do you want to
spend eternity in Heaven with Him? What are you willing to do
to maintain a relationship with Him? Are you desperate to know
Him?
